What Benefits of Disk Defragmentation

Yes, whenever you store a file on your hard drive but there is no sufficient space out there then, it fragments the file and stores the file fragments in the small empty spaces. But if you do not defragment the device then it makes your pc run really slow as it takes a longer time to access the files which are fragmented and their parts and far apart from each other. Fragmentation may create problematic situtations. Little chunks of memory fragments lying here and there on the hard drive are sometimes left unused.

We all know it is important to check and fix the errors and some other things regularly on our computer to make it run faster. You need to update the software, scan your computer, remove unwanted files, junk files, empty recycle bin and so on. But there is one more thing which should be done at a regular basis to keep your system applications run faster and smoother and that is disk defragmentation.

Over the time, the computer hard drives gets fragmented. We experience time delays in applications, system lags, abrupt closing of applications, system hanging problems due to fragmented disks. So, to solve this problem you need to defragment your hard drive to improve the efficiency of your system.

What is Disk Defragmentation?

Disk defragmentation is pretty important to make your system run faster and smoother, But what does disk defragmentation actually mean? What does it do? Well, the process of disk defragmentation is just the opposite of fragmentation. In this process, it consolidates the fragmentation of the files. When you store some data, let’s say a file in your hard drive but there is not enough contiguous space in there then the file is fragmented and the data is stored in the small spaces available on the drive. Also, the free space is moved to one end of the drive thus making it easier to store and access other big files.

So, when you defragment your disk, all the fragments of the file are moved around and bring together to make it a whole file and this is what we call disk defragmentation. Disk defragmentation helps in improving the efficiency of the data retrieval and the whole performance of your PC. Below are some of the best benefits of disk defragmentation. Let’s have a look.

Benefits of Disk Defragmentation

Faster Application

The topmost benefit of disk defragmentation is it makes all your computer programs and application run faster. As I earlier mentioned that disk defragmentation brings together all the parts of a file at one place in contiguous memory blocks so, it makes it easier to access that file and hence, making the applications run faster. Many times the system hanging problem is also solved with a simple disk defragmentation.

Extend The Hard Drive Life

Another benefit of disk defragmentation is that it will help to extend the hard drive life. The logic behind this is, when all the parts of a file are placed together then it will help the mechanical part of the hard drive to travel less distance and there will be lesser wear and tear. The mechanical disk head has to travel more frequently in case of a fragmented disk to retrieve different parts of the same file.

Reduces The Errors

It also helps in reducing the errors. It can point out the bad sectors and avoid them which can cause great loss or damage to the data if it is stored there.

Efficient Security

One more benefit you get in doing disk defragmentation is that it takes lesser time for antivirus to scan your files when all its parts are stored together. Hence, it improves the security of your data and system.

Though Windows 10 automatically defragments your disk on a regular basis, you should check for it if you see the files are taking a long time to load and the programs are not running smoothly. That time you should check and defrag your hard drive. Disk defragmentation is a pretty easy process. You can do it on your system without downloading and installing any third party software.

  1. So, first of all, turn on your PC and type optimize drives in the search menu of your Windows 10.
  2. From the searches, select Optimize drives application option and click on it to run.

  3. Now, it will show you whether your drives are fragmented or not or you need to optimize them or not. So, for the same, click on the drive and then hit the Analyze option. It will analyze the drive and show you how much of your drive is fragmented.

  4. After that, you can select the drive which you want to defragment and click the optimize button. When the process is completed, it will show you 0% fragmented besides the drive name.

So, this was all about disk defragmentation and how can your defragment your drive. This is a super easy process which can be done in within a few minutes. I would suggest that you keep checking for the percentage of fragmented drives in your system at regular intervals and if you think that defragmentation is necessary, process it. This was all for today, will come up with more informative stuff.
