The modern incarnation consists of calcite-precipitation, bacterium that germinate when water enters the cracks of decaying concrete and as such they fill up the emerging air gaps.

Kinetic Paving

Solar Roads and Pavements are under development.

Yes, the scientists around the world are developing “Kinetic Paving”. This pavement will harvest energy from footsteps of pedestrians to generate electricity.

Also in 2014, a video was made to tease another power system. The video consisted of modular solar panels embedded in a roadway surface.

The company managed to score millions of views and crowdsourced $2,000,000 to fund the project. This achievement deserves its due credit. Albeit, it did not go without tremendous backlash, as most constructions companies around the world said the project was doomed to fail.

However, the idea was adopted in Missouri in 2017 as authorities granted more than $50,000 for the development and testing of solar roadways.

3D Printing in Construction

3D Printing technology has played a critical role in producing physical manifestations of construction objects, in the last year.

It replaced physical mockups and saved a lot of money, while also improving efficiency.
