Laptop Battery Lifespans

Lithium-ion batteries are common in home electronics. They are one of the most popular types of rechargeable batteries for portable electronics, with a high energy density, tiny memory effect[9] and low self-discharge. LIBs are also growing in popularity for military, battery electric vehicle and aerospace applications

Although there is a lot of information on the internet about the best ways to improve the battery life of your laptop, there are equally as many misleading myths and misconceptions. Differentiating the facts from the fiction can be the difference between merely preserving the battery life of your laptop or unconsciously leading to its detriment.

While the ordinary laptop will have an average battery lifespan of between two to six hours, according to Computer Hope, there is no written rule on how long one charge should take your laptop. Instead, it depends on what you are using the laptop for and the battery saving tips you are utilizing. Some of these include switching to power saving mode and lowering the brightness of your screen.

Here are a few of these myths and the truth behind them:

You Shouldn’t Charge and Use Your Laptop Simultaneously

This is often one of the most popular myths among laptop users, claiming that charging the laptop while using it will lower the battery life of the laptop. Additionally, the myth is that this gradually lowers its lifespan. Simply put, the battery life of your laptop will typically depend on the task that you are exposing it to.

For instance, one charge will last for a shorter period when using Metabox laptops to play games than when using them to listen to music. The truth to this myth is that overheating your laptop battery will lead to reduced battery life and lifespan. If the task you are using the laptop for tends to demand a lot from your gadget, it is best to work with it while it is unplugged to avoid overheating it.

Overcharging Your Laptop Will Spoil It

It is common to find laptops that can’t work without being plugged into a power source. However, the fact that you continue charging your laptop even after it is fully charged will not lead to this. Letting it continue to charge for long periods even after it is full will neither make it addicted to AC power nor lower its battery life.

Modern laptops are designed in a way that they stop charging once the battery reaches maximum charging capacity. Unlike old laptops that would start overheating once they are overcharged, modern laptops will only overheat if the charging system is flawed.

Only Charge the Battery When at Its Lowest

This applied mainly to traditional nickel-based batteries which would work best when charged once they were fully drained. However, lithium-ion batteries are more efficient when compared to their predecessors. They will typically last longer provided that you never drain them completely. Such extreme discharges will typically confuse your laptop’s battery indicator. This will result in it wrongly estimating the time it will take for your laptop to be fully discharged.

Fully Charge Your Laptop Before First Use

This myth holds true to traditional laptops that used nickel-based batteries. However, modern notebooks and gaming laptops will not necessarily need you to do so. This is because they come with lithium-ion batteries which tend to have self-calibrating batteries.

You can typically use your laptop out of the box without having to charge it. Though not necessary, it might still be wise to first charge your laptop to full charge to uphold proper calibration, which will help the laptop to determine how the battery should behave.

Conclusion

Everyone would love to use their laptop for hours without having to plug it into a power source. Despite being on a quest to achieve this goal, it would be counterproductive to follow some of the myths on the internet. Consider the above suggestions to enjoy prolonging your laptop’s battery life.
