How Technology Is Transforming Lives

Technology is the development and use of basic tools. The prehistoric discovery of how to control fire and the later Neolithic Revolution increased the available sources of food, and the invention of the wheel helped humans to travel in and control their environment.

Technology has many effects. It has helped develop more advanced economies (including today’s global economy) and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products known as pollution and deplete natural resources to the detriment of Earth’s environment.

Innovations have always influenced the values of a society and raised new questions of the ethics of technology. Examples include the rise of the notion of efficiency in terms of human productivity, and the challenges of bioethics.

Whilst mobility cars for the disabled have actually been around since the 1950s, they were widely considered as undesirable motors.

Over the past two decades, technology has transformed the way we live. And fortunately, its soaring influence has encouraged its rise in inclusivity.

So, it’s unsurprising that equipment in this field has – and is continuing to – transform the lives of people with disabilities.

In 2003, all makes were banned from use and destroyed – though some remain as exhibits in museums.

But innovations in these motors had already been taking place since 1990, with the introduction of cars with lowered rear floors. 14 years later, Allied Mobility took accessibility cars to a whole new level by adding the five-seat mode to this design. Since then, wheelchair accessible vehicles have been going from strength to strength and now offer more independence to disabled drivers and car users than ever before.

Adaptive Computer Technology

Assistive technology enables people to perform activities that they would otherwise struggle with. Whilst voice recognition software has existed for decades, enhancements in this area within the past 10 years mean that this service can enhance the lives of people with communication difficulties to a greater extent.

This device enables people with speech and motor disabilities to communicate and be more independent, which in turn helps them to build self-esteem. It also encourages a greater sense of belonging in the wider community for a group of people who can often feel excluded from mainstream society.

And because mobile phones and tablets have become more frequently used over the past decade, fewer disabled people feel self-conscious when entering public places with assistive technology. Technology in all forms, therefore, is playing a huge role in improving inclusivity in general.

In fact, manufacturers of these technological marvels aim for them to be as commonly used as wheelchairs within the near future. Mechanical frames that wrap around parts or all of the body, they guarantee mobility for people who have lost the ability to walk. This includes – but is not limited to – victims of stroke and paralyses.

Despite their high production cost, manufacturers hope that they will enter the mainstream through medical use. If this does happen, it could transform hundreds of lives, increase higher employment levels, and inspire even greater changes in attitudes towards people with disabilities.

Given the advancements in accessible technology over the past decade, a world in which disability does not limit a person’s ability to explore, communicate and perform a range of activities is beginning to look achievable. Of course, there is still a long way to go before this becomes a reality. But this kind of equipment is already hugely transforming lives – and may just hold the key to a society that works for everybody.
